About the South Florida Black Journalists Association
The South Florida Black Journalists Association serves the varied and unique diaspora of Broward and Miami-Dade communities. For three decades, the regional chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists has united newsmakers in the goals of media diversity and professional excellence.
Our purpose is being fulfilled three ways:
- Through our scholarships, including the Rochelle Bridges Memorial Scholarship, the Florida International University Scholarship, the new Dwight Lauderdale Journalism Award and the Miami Herald Multimedia Scholarship.
- Through our outreach, including several media workshops a year to educate concerned residents about the most effective way to get coverage for issues, events and concerns in their neighborhoods, and volunteer work with the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Hollywood. Our members also assist with the University of Miami High School Journalism Workshop, Florida Memorial College career day, and various other yearly community commitments.
- Through our advocacy. The SFBJA works hard to ensure fair and unbiased coverage on issues important to black South Florida, and to provide media outlets with a resource of talented, professional journalists of color to turn to, so that everyone gets the “full picture.”
Membership in SFBJA helps journalists build stronger networks, facilitates career growth and helps us maintain the highest standards of excellence in our profession. Full membership for full-time and freelance journalists is $35 a year. Associate members (educators, advertising or public relations) pay $25 a year. Students may join for $15.
Monthly meetings are every third Saturday at 11 a.m. and they alternate between a Miami-Dade and Broward County location.
