For three decades, the South Florida Black Journalists Association has stood for diversity, fairness and excellence. We contribute nuance to coverage of regional and national issues, host workshops that teach attendees how to access the media, and award scholarships to deserving students who aspire to journalism careers.

The SFBJA’s annual scholarship and awards reception allows us to honor black graduating high school seniors and currently enrolled college students who are pursuing careers in journalism, multimedia, or communications. We also take the time to acknowledge colleagues who, over the past year, have provided exceptional coverage of issues affecting South Florida’s unique black communities.

These receptions have been successful in attracting some of the most compelling individuals in news. Veteran news anchor Dwight Lauderdale and CNN’s Soledad O’Brien have been keynote speakers in recent years.

This year, in spite of the tough economy and unrelenting job losses in our industry, we are forging ahead with our mission, but we need some help.

We are seeking corporate partners for our 2010 Scholarship Drive and our Fall 2010 Political Awareness Town Hall Meeting.

And we’re asking for donations in kind – event tickets, hotel stays, dinner certificates, etc. to be used in a silent auction held during this reception. Your assistance in either one or both of these areas would be greatly appreciated.
